Tasting Note by Nick Bulleid MW
Background

The growing season in Margaret River started beautifully, with good winter and spring rains and the vines put on good growth. The only downsides were strong winds and unusually heavy rain in October, sometimes with hail, which reduced the crops without damaging quality. January was hotter than usual and brought the harvest on early. Grape quality was overall very good.

Both grape varieties were estate-grown. After pressing, clear juice from the separate varieties underwent cool fermentation in several batches in stainless steel tanks, using different yeast cultures to promote complexity. The wines then matured on their yeast lees, to build texture while retaining freshness, and the different batches were then blended.

The blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon – universal partners in the white wines of Bordeaux – has been very successful in Western Australia and particularly in Margaret River. The Sauvignon Blanc there provides tropical flavours, while Semillon produces grassy wines with good body. The flavours complement each other beautifully. The wine is best enjoyed while it retains freshness, which it will do into 2010. It is a versatile wine, delicious with salads, seafood dishes and white meats.
