Tasting Note by Nick Bulleid MW
Background

The Orange region is host to some of the highest and coolest vineyards in New South Wales and Australia. These lie between 600 and 1100 metres altitude on the slopes of Mount Canobolas. After a succession of warmer years, the 2008 season returned to being typically cool and with good spring rains.

The Verdelho grapes for this wine were grown on the southern slopes of Mount Canobolas just above 600 metres altitude where Verdelho, a variety suited to warm areas, would ripen well, yet still show the lifted aroma and crispness of wines from cool regions. The clarified juice was cold–fermented in stainless steel tanks and the wine bottled without oak maturation.

This wine contrasts the softer, broader style of Verdelho from warmer regions. Its citrus flavours and crisp acidity are more akin to Riesling, although it has Verdelho’s typically full body. It is best enjoyed through 2009, while its flavours are fresh and lively, although it will develop more richness until at least the end of 2010.
