2009 BackVintage Barossa Shiraz

2009 BackVintage Barossa Shiraz

...A world away from a Rhone syrah, this spicy Barossa Shiraz shows why red wines from this region are so highly prized.

This Shiraz combines the sweet-fruit aromas of the Valley floor with the black pepper perfume of Eden Valley. The palate is medium bodied, with intense, black cherry flavour and hints of spice. It finishes with fine, balanced tannin.

This wine is fully ready to enjoy now, as its balance is so good. It will develop further complexity past 2013. Enjoy it with red meat dishes and pasta.

Matched perfectly with roast fennel sausages.

Tasting Note by Nick Bulleid MW
Background

An overall cool summer in the Barossa was punctuated by a heatwave in early February, thankfully well before harvest.
Crops were on the low side and produced wines with considerable concentration.
This wine was made largely from Barossa Valley Shiraz, with a small proportion of Eden Valley Shiraz and a little Barossa Valley Mourvčdre.

The grapes were fermented in static potters and rotary fermenters. Warm temperatures at the onset of fermentation and also 3-5 days post ferment maceration has helped extract soft fleshy tannins and build wine structure.

Matured for 17 months in American & French oak, this wine shows all the hallmarks of a traditional Barossa shiraz, The wine is ready to drink and will develop more complexity until at least 2013.
