2009 Margaret River Chardonnay

2009 Margaret River Chardonnay
This is a fine, elegant Margaret River Chardonnay showing intense honeydew melon, cashew flavours and subtle complexity. The wine was entirely fermented in French oak barrels, 15% of them new and the balance older. Made in the ‘modern’ style, it is medium bodied and fresh, with under-stated oak and clean acidity maintaining its tight balance. It will gain richness and greater complexity until at least 2012, when it will suit richly flavoured dishes.

Weather conditions in the 2009 vintage provided good rainfall combined with no wind or hail damage during the Spring. Temperatures were very mild, with virtually no extreme heat during the growing season. Quality is very pleasing indeed. The whites have benefited from the mild season and retained lifted, fresh fruit aromas in all varieties and they exhibit terrific acidity on the palate.

Tasting Notes by Nick Bulleid MW
The wine was entirely barrel fermented in French-coopered Burgundian barriques, 15% of them new, with the remainder in older barrels. It was then held on its yeast lees during maturation. These techniques ensure a more subtle integration of fruit and oak flavours and help the wine retain freshness and vibrancy. It was bottled in April 2010. This is an excellent example of the finer, “modern” style of Australian Chardonnay – medium bodied, with fresh flavours, subtle complexity and good acidity.

The wine has the freshness and balance to suit a wide range of dishes, particularly delicately flavoured fish and white meats. It will gain more richness and complexity until at least 2012, when it will suit richly sauced courses.
