The Wines: Penfolds Grange (various vintages)
Winemakers: Max Shubert, Don Ditter, John Duval, Peter Gago
Region: Various old vine sites around Australia
Notes : From humble beginnings in the 1950s, Grange has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over four decades. Today, it is a wine of international renown, with each vintage eagerly awaited by collectors both in Australia and overseas.
Penfolds Grange is a wine of extraordinary dimension and power. Richly textured, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, these wines, regardless of vintage, require medium to long-term cellaring. They develop into immensely complex, beguiling wines that seduce the senses.
An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Penfolds Grange is the quality standard against which all other Australian red wines are judged. To share a mature Grange, 15 to 20 years old, in fine condition, is one of the great wine experiences.

The Wines: Mac Forbes
Winemakers: Mac Forbes
Region: Yarra Valley, Strathbogie Ranges & King Valley (VIC)
Notes : Since leaving Mount Mary and heading overseas in early 2002,
I have finally achieved my goal of finding my way back to the Yarra Valley.
Almost three years away (two years) as European based winemaker for Southcorp Wines followed by winemaking in Portugal and Austria was an incredible journey. Not only did I get to see most of Europe but I am now lucky to have worked across a number of European Countries. I have also been able to form friendships with some very mad and interesting producers which has further developed my idea of what good wine is about.
With all varieties, I have been looking to pick earlier seeking maximum varietal and site expression. Over ripe and over oak wines are something I don’t enjoy. Therefore, restraint and elegance are paramount to my style of wine. Typically all wines will display fine primary fruit which over the years will show evolution and development. Length and primary fruit with layers is the goal and not short intense sweet fruit wines that fall apart in a short period of time.

The Wines: Gibson's & Australian Old Vine Collection
Winemakers:Rob Gibson
Region: Barossa & Eden Valley (SA)
Notes :
BarossaVale Shiraz 2004-An exemplary Barossa season, being slightly warm in November and December, but very cool in January. Shiraz was more ‘pepper;spice’ than normal.
Maturation was 24 months in 70% French and 30% American oak barrels (75% new oak).
Very deep violet with purple hue.Intense mocha, sweet spice Shiraz characters on the nose with interesting notes of vanilla, orange peel and anise. The palate is powerful, juicy and shows all the hallmarks of good Shiraz treated with sensitivity to produce a great wine with aging potential. It shows generous sweet fruit balance with perfect acidity and chocolate dry tannins. The balance and finish is harmonious and lovely fruit and dark chocolate flavours linger on the palate.
Old Vine Collection Barossa Shiraz 2002- The grapes are sourced 100% from Barossa Valley Shiraz, hand-picked from three very small 1850's planting's in the Barossa.
2004 was a fine sunny year with mild temperatures and low water demand.
Matured for 24 months in a combination of new to 5 year old French and American oak, the wine has a deep opaque purple black colour. It displays rich tobacco, pepper and sweet vanilla aromas with complex notes of cedar and pine-nut emerging. Charming plump ripe fruit flavours of quince and salted plum is gracefully balanced with lively acidity and soft dry tannin. This youthful wine shows interesting complex notes of chocolate and cinnamon typical of grapes from these very old Shiraz vines. Shows wonderful finesse and will build with time. Great cellaring potential.

The Wines: Glaetzer Wines
Winemakers: Colin & Ben Glaetzer
Region: Barossa (SA)
Notes : Winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established his own label to create wines he’s passionate about - limited quantities of benchmark Barossa Valley reds. It is the pinnacle of Colin's 30-year career with achievements such as his creation of the revered Barossa Valley Estates E & E Black Pepper Shiraz.
The birth of Glaetzer Wines also signalled a new era for Colin’s family which boasts more than its fair share of winemakers. The clan includes Colin, his oenology-trained wife Judith, twin brother/winemaker John, and five winemakers among the couple's three sons and their wives!
The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family left Germany on board the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer “Habsburg” and took seven weeks to reach their final destination of Port Adelaide. From here they settled in a country town called Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley where they started their new life in Australia. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley and the current generation is firmly entrenched in the family wine business.
