The BackVintage Wines Story

BackVintage Wines Team

Established in 2003 by Julian Todd alongside some former Southcorp colleagues, BackVintage Wines Australia is one of Australia's fastest growing internet based, retail wineries.

At BackVintage we set out to establish an innovative wine business and do things differently. After identifying a considerable over-supply in the marketplace, we saw an opportunity to bring together premium wines from premium regions from Australia and New Zealand.

We took this concept one step further by engaging the high-profile Master of Wine (and International wine judge) Nick Bulleid. Nick independently selects and endorses each wine BackVintage sell and if it's not good enough for Nick then we won't sell it. It's our form of quality assurance.

One of our toughest internal debates was pricing. By buying wine direct from vineyards, and by selling online direct to the consumer, we knew we could get quality wines to the market at wholesale prices, making our wines great value for money.

To get the business going, we started off by bottling a total of only 256 cases of a Coonawarra Cab Sav and McLaren Vale Shiraz. It seemed a huge volume for us at the time. We concluded that if our idea “turned to custard”, at least we had tried, and at worst, we had filled our home wine cellars with good wine for ourselves and friends for many years to come! Yet within only 2 weeks of selling our first wine, we placed an order for the next bottling run. Since then we haven’t looked back.

Even though we don't grow grapes, we are still a winery. Our winemaker, Rob Moody, the former Chief Winemaker at Wynns and senior winemaker at Penfolds, undertakes all the conventional winery activities including blending, bottling and labelling. We have the same focus as a winery, to produce the best wine possible, with a strong emphasis on getting the wines to the consumer for the best possible price.
