Bert and Gertrud Salomon bridge the old and new wine worlds. Harvesting twice a year they commute between their famous eighth generation wine estate Salomon Undhof in Austria and the Finniss River in South Australia. This wine combines 60% Shiraz and 40% Cabernet sauvignon from 17 year-old vines grown on their property. The 2010 vintage followed an excellent growing season with good spring rains and a warm to hot summer. The grapes were fermented in open fermenters for 10 days and the wine then matured for 12 months in French and American hogsheads, 10% of them new. Bert is helped by iconic Australian and BackVintage winemaker Mike Farmilo, long-time friend and Penfolds group red winemaker until 1997.
ColourDeep red-garnet
NoseConsiderable depth of ripe, dark plum with a touch of chocolate
Structure / PalateFull-bodied. Rich flavours combining dark fruits, spices and hints of cedar and mocha from bottle-age. Plenty of mouth-coating, soft tannin. This wine shows Mike and Bert Salomon's combined ability to produce deeply flavoured, highly complex wine. It is now showing complexity from development, but will continue to age further for at least four years. Flavoursome red meat dishes, such as winter casseroles, and hard cheeses provide an ideal match.
James Halliday 2012 Wine Companion review: "Very good crimson-purple colour; a wine that has massively benefited from the '10 vintage; the mid-palate is awash with plum and blackberry fruit, but is eclipsed by the drive and energy of the back-palate and finish; fruit, oak and tannins are all on the same page." 94 points. Drink to 2030.
