2014 Château Picoron Les Terraces Grand Vin de Bordeaux

2014 Château Picoron Les Terraces Grand Vin de Bordeaux
Nick Bulleid MW's Tasting Note

Background
The Château and its vineyards lie in the village of Sainte-Colombe, 6km east of the town of St Emilion.
It carries the appellation Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux.

The Summer of 2014 in the Bordeaux sat on a roller-coaster - an average June and July, a very cold August and then one of the warmest Septembers on record. The harvest period in October was warm with occasional, welcome rain. The 2014 vintage was generally rated by the UK trade as “Good”.

Les Terraces was made from 100% hand-picked Merlot grapes (approx 2.5 tons/acre), fermented in typical, conical Bordeaux fermenters, matured in oak barrels and tanks for 12-14 months and thence bottled in March 2016.

Colour
Medium-deep garnet to brick red.

Nose
Sweet red plums. Complex, cedar and leather overtones from bottle-age. Hints of dried herbs.

Structure / Palate
The wine is medium bodied showing a good depth of red fruit combining with Merlot leafiness.
It is evenly balanced and has dry tannins on the finish.
The wine is mature and will maintain its flavours and quality for at least another two years.

Les Terraces

The quality terroir of south facing clay over limestone plots grows grapes of powerful fruit, and gives it a very Australian flavour, reflecting the heritage of Glenda and Frank Kalyk, its' Australian owners.

The 2014 vintage was the first under their proprietorship. The grapes were vinified under the direction of well known St Emilion Grand Cru Classé vigneron, Christian Dauriac. The wine was bottled as a special cuvee, Les Terrasses.

Incidentally, after only 4 years of ownership, you will be pleased to note that the leading French Wine magazine, La Revue du Vin de France recently published its results of its blind tasting of the 2018 vintage for all appellations in France. Château Picoron was ranked 3rd in the whole of the Côtes de Bordeaux and received a higher score than many of the neighbouring Grand Cru Classe wines of St Emilion. What a great result for Glenda and Frank !
