2014 Kangarilla Hill Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir
Nick Bulleid's Tasting Note

Background
The 2014 growing season in the Hills was close to ideal, in spite of the extremely dry and windy conditions experienced through spring. The heatwave experienced in January was early enough to avoid damage to the grapes and was followed by welcome rain in mid-February.

The grapes for this wine were grown in the Adelaide Hills on the Glengrove Estate at 330 metres altitude overlooking McLaren Vale. They were picked on 23rd March, fermented in small open tanks and the wine then matured for 15 months in 30% new and 70% seasoned medium toast fine French oak.

Colour
Mid garnet-brick red.

Nose
Complex and developed, showing ripe red plum, leather and vanilla/cedar overtones.

Structure / Palate
Full in the mouth, medium bodied. Good depth of ripe, red fruit and cigar box-like complexity development. A little warmth and roundness from alcohol. Finishes with soft, even tannins.

Lovers of previous vintages will know that this is not a youthful, fruity Pinot noir but, rather, a richly flavoured, highly complex aged red wine.

It is now mature, but will maintain its character for at least a couple more years. Pinot Noir is always beautiful with duck, but this has the weight to suit other meat dishes, in particular roasts or steaks. It would also go well with tomato or meat-based pasta sauces.
