Huon Hooke 91 points Silver Ribbon

Following our release of the 2014 Les Terrasses from Ch. Picoron, we are now pleased to be offering the Château’s “senior” 2015 vintage wine. This is a firmly structured wine that speaks of its region and year rather than, in the Australian context, a supple, soft Merlot.

This wine has been is consistently awarded 91 points by US and UK wine journalists and critics.

Nick Bulleid MW's Tasting Note

The Château and its vineyards lie in the village of Sainte-Colombe, 6km east of the town of St Emilion.
It carries the appellation Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux.

The Summer of 2015 in the Bordeaux was overall dry and hot, apart from a wet August which brought relief to the vineyards. October weather prior to harvest was warm with a burst of rain in the first week. The 2015 vintage on Bordeaux’s Right Bank is generally rated by the UK trade as “very good” and is regarded as the best year since 2010.

Like Les Terrasses. the Château Picoron was made from 100% Merlot grapes, fermented in small tronconic thermally controlled stainless steel vats, giving maximum control over the fermentation process, and then matured in French oak barrels (50% new) for 14 months.

Medium-deep garnet red

Rich dark plums, with cedar and spices from oak. A little complexity arising from development.

Structure / Palate
Medium to full body. Generous and plump, with good depth of dark fruits and a hint of fruit compote.
Plenty of fine, dry tannins on the finish. Good length.

It’s enjoyable now with richly flavoured red meat or generally char-grilled dishes, but will soften and gain further complexity over at least five years.

Les Terraces

The quality terroir of south facing clay over limestone plots grows grapes of powerful fruit, and gives it a very Australian flavour, reflecting the heritage of Glenda and Frank Kalyk, its' Australian owners.

The 2014 vintage was the first under their proprietorship. The grapes were vinified under the direction of well known St Emilion Grand Cru Classé vigneron, Christian Dauriac. The wine was bottled as a special cuvee, Les Terrasses.

Incidentally, after only 4 years of ownership, you will be pleased to note that the leading French Wine magazine, La Revue du Vin de France recently published its results of its blind tasting of the 2018 vintage for all appellations in France. Château Picoron was ranked 3rd in the whole of the Côtes de Bordeaux and received a higher score than many of the neighbouring Grand Cru Classe wines of St Emilion. What a great result for Glenda and Frank !

Huon Hooke 2020 The Real Review
“90-94 points - what does this mean?
The 90-point threshold is an important one, both psychologically and practically. 90 points is a silver medal in many wine competitions, and that indicates a very high quality wine. Aside from technical quality, it will possess character, balance and that hard-to-define element, style. And also textural refinement, as opposed to coarseness.
