2018 16 Stops Currency Creek Chardonnay
Nick Bulleid MW's Tasting Note

Background

This wine was made by the BackVintage winemaker, Mike Farmilo and our colleagues at the Willunga 100 winery.

The grapes were grown in Currency Creek, which lies just south of McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. Its cool sea breezes and night-time temperatures are ideal for ripening flavoursome, yet elegant Chardonnay.

The 2017/2018 growing season in South Australia was punctuated by a hot January, relieved by cooler nights, which brought the grapes to ripeness early, in the first week of February.

The wine was fermented and matured in tank, the latter on the yeast lees, which brought more generosity and complexity while helping to maintain freshness.

Colour
Bright, pale yellow with a hint of green

Nose
Aromatic, with white peach and nectarine. Just a hint of citrus.

Structure / Palate
Medium-full body. Fresh stonefruit flavours with a hint of savoury lees. A soft flow through to balanced, acidity on the finish.

This Chardonnay shines out with its fresh, generous fruit flavours and ‘easy’ balance.
It will suit a wide range of food, including chicken dishes, seafood and salads. It’s also delicious by itself.
Enjoy while it’s young and fresh throughout 2020.
