Tasting Notes by Nick Bulleid MW
Background

We are delighted to have found this beautiful example of two-year-old Eden Valley Chardonnay.

The 2017 growing season was a mild one. It started with a wet winter and spring, which supported good vine growth. Spring and summer temperatures in Eden Valley were below average which, in this cool region, brought a welcome change from a succession of hotter years. The result was a long, even ripening period, ideal for fresh fruit flavours and good retention of acidity.

Approximately 35% of this wine was fermented in French oak barriques and the remainder in stainless steel. Fermentation was conducted by the “natural” yeast on the grapes, without the addition of cultured yeast. This added an extra layer of complexity and texture to the wine. Ageing on the yeast lees after completion of the fermentation was continued for around 10 months, maintaining freshness and adding a soft texture.

Colour
Pale yellow with a hint of green.

Nose
Complex, with white peach, cashew and subtle oak.

Structure / Palate
Medium-bodied, fine and fresh. Delicate stonefruit flavours. Finishes with a light tannin texture and lingering hints of cashew.

The wine is a beautiful accompaniment to seafood and chicken dishes, or to flavoursome salads. It will fill out further with more complex flavours into 2021.
