The early growing season in Clare received higher than average rainfall, but there was a dry period leading to vintage. The summer overall was cooler than in previous years yet picking started earlier than usual, thanks to the dry conditions. These Sangiovese grapes were picked on 1st March. The wine, 100% Sangiovese, was matured for 14 months in French oak barrels, 5% of which were new.
Colour Bright, light to mid red.
Nose Fresh and fragrant, showing raspberry aromas and savoury hints.
Structure / Palate Medium bodied, with lively red fruit flavours. Finishes with light, dry tannins and pleasing length. This 2017 wine is a very similar follow-on to the 2016, showing the same, light fresh red berry fruits before Sangiovese’s lightly gritty tannins dry the finish. It’s delicious with pasta, savoury salads with olives and anchovies or osso buco. Enjoy it while it’s youthful fruit shows at its best, say before 2021.
