2017 Kangarilla Hill McLaren Vale Cabernet Merlot
Tasting Notes by Nick Bulleid MW
Background

The grapes for this wine were grown on Glengrove Vineyard at 330 metres altitude on the border of McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. The 2017 season started with a wet Spring. Summer and Autumn were mostly cool, leading to the latest vintage for several years.

Tasting Notes

Colour
Medium-deep red with a garnet edge

Nose
Dark berries with some spices from oak. Cigar box fragrances developing with bottle-age.

Structure / Palate
Medium to full bodied. Fresh, dark berry flavours. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides a firm tannin bite and balanced acidity whilst Merlot adds flesh to the mid-palate.

This wine gives plenty of flavour now, typical of the varietal mix and McLaren Vale’s generosity. It will gain further cedary complexity past 2023. Try it with flavoursome pasta or red meat dishes, particularly lamb, char-grilled vegetables or hard cheeses.
