We sourced the grapes for this Shiraz from the Ruffilli Estate vineyard at Little Rd, Willunga. Approximately 80-120m above sea level, the vineyard has calcareous clay soils with areas of black clays and the vines are 20 - 40 years old. The grapes were fermented in McLaren Flat and matured for 16 months in McLaren Vale in Taransaud, Saury, Seguin French oak hogs heads under Mike Farmilo's watchful eye...

Nick Bulleid's Tasting Notes

After erratic weather in Spring, the Summer in McLaren Vale was overall dry and hot, with January and February rainfall well below average. The vintage period was merely warm and grape quality excellent. The overall result was low yields that produced generously flavoured red wines.

Deep, bright red with slight purple.

Red plum, blackberry and subtle hints of vanilla from oak.

Structure / Palate
Full-bodied. Rich, ripe red and dark plums. A touch of chocolate. Plenty of soft tannins.

Thanks to the 2017/2018 growing season, this wine is a more concentrated version our 2016 Block 8. Its great depth of flavour is typical of McLaren Vale and it will benefit from a short while in bottle, say into Autumn, for its exuberance to settle down. While ready to give pleasure with full-flavoured foods, in particular red meat dishes, it will soften further and gain complexity past 2025.
