2018 Erin Eyes 'Ballycapple' Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting Notes by Nick Bulleid MW
Background

The grapes for this wine were grown on mature vines averaging over 37 years-old at Sevenhill in the northern Clare Valley. The Clare had yet another dry winter, which led to a warm to hot growing season. This brought on an early vintage, these grapes being harvested on 8th March.

The grapes were fermented cool, at 20°C, to preserve fruit intensity. The wine was then transferred to barrels of French oak, 30% of them new, for 23 months.

Colour
Mid purple/red.

Nose
Youthful and aromatic, with dark berries and blackcurrant leaf fragrance. A hint of raspberry.

Structure / Palate
Medium bodied. Ripe cassis flavours. Fine tannins with a gentle Cabernet cut. Ripe berries and blackcurrant leaf linger well.

This wine is very elegantly styled, which surprised me from this very warm season. Unusually for Cabernet sauvignon, the tannins are very approachable now, but there is no lack of flavour.
The oak is barely detectable, so well is it integrated. The wine drinks beautifully already but will develop further complexity through 2024.

This is a flexible wine, to accompany red meats particularly lamb, pasta, roasted vegetables – any flavoursome dish.
