Tasting Notes by Nick Bulleid MW

Background
The grapes for this wine were grown on mature, over 24 year-old vines at Watervale in the Clare Valley. The Clare had yet another dry winter, which led to a warm to hot growing season. This brought on an early vintage, these grapes being harvested in two picks on 26th and 28th February.

The two batches were fermented cool, at 20°C, to preserve fruit intensity, then combined and matured in French oak, 35% of which was new, for 22 months.

Colour
Mid to deep purple/red.

Nose
Rich red and dark berries, with nutmeg and other spices from oak.

Structure / Palate
Medium-full bodied. Ripe berry flavours and a hint of mint. Plenty of soft, balanced tannin. A touch of acidity adds freshness. Good length.

The warm season has returned this wine to the more generous style we found in the 2015 and 2013 vintages, albeit with softer tannins. It drinks beautifully already but will develop further complexity through 2024.

This is a flexible wine, to accompany red meats, pasta, roasted vegetables – any flavoursome dish.
