Cellar Door Specials 2019 Peter Drayton 'Wildstreak' Hunter Valley Semillon

2019 Peter Drayton 'Wildstreak' Hunter Valley Semillon

2019 Peter Drayton 'Wildstreak' Hunter Valley Semillon
Nick Bulleid MW's Tasting Note

Background

The early summer of 2018 in the Hunter was dry, and these conditions continued into 2019, thankfully with enough moisture from spring rain to support the vines.

Yields were low and grape flavours concentrated. Following pressing, the juice was fermented with cultured yeast in neutral, stainless steel tanks to maximise the delicate fruit characters.

The wine was bottled early in July 2019 to further protect the flavours.

Colour
Pale yellow.

Nose
Fresh and intense, with citrus and hints of lemon curd.

Structure / Palate
Adds a little toast to the lemon curd, but still fresh. Good depth of flavour. Attractive, even balance with moderate acidity and lingering complexity.

The Hunter Valley does something special with semillon, unlike almost anywhere else in the world.
This wine is beginning to show how an apparently light, crisp wine can develop softer balance and complexity in bottle. It’s beautiful now with seafood salads and will gain more richness beyond 2024, suiting richer flavoured dishes.
