2020 Forest Hill Highbury Fields Mt Barker Riesling
Nick Bulleid MW's Tasting Note

Background

Winter in Mount Barker was dry, unusual for Western Australia, and the dry conditions continued through the summer. The consequences were low yields and an early vintage. Fruit condition was very good, with small concentrated berries.
The grapes were picked in the third week of February. After pressing, the juice was fermented in several batches, with both added yeast and “wild” fermentation, one portion matured on yeast lees to build texture.

Colour
Pale yellow.

Nose
Very fragrant, with citrus and hints of lychee and stonefruit.

Structure / Palate
Crisp, lively and intense, with more lemon emerging. Finishes dry, with fresh acidity and lingering fruit.

Great Southern, and especially Mount Barker, is one of the classic regions for Australian Riesling and this wine shows why. It is delicious now by itself or with salads, seafood and Thai dishes and will gain lemon curd-like complexity until at least 2025.
