2021 Forest Hill Highbury Fields Mt Barker Riesling
Nick Bulleid MW's Tasting Note

Background

Another dry winter in Mount Barker was followed by welcome rain during spring. The good moisture and favourable weather during flowering led to good yields, a great contrast to the poor crops last year. Unseasonal rain in February caused no damage and a mild autumn allowed the fruit to ripen nicely by harvest.

The grapes came from two blocks at Forest Hill and were picked between the 5th and 10th March. The two batches were fermented separately, with both added yeast and “wild” fermentation, one portion maturing on yeast lees to build texture.

Colour
Pale yellow

Nose
Delicate, with lemon and distinctly floral aromas.

Structure / Palate
Very fine and crisp, yet with intense citrus. Finishes dry, with fresh acidity and good length.

Great Southern, and especially Mount Barker, is one of the classic regions for Australian Riesling and this wine shows why. Delicious now by itself or with salads, seafood and Thai dishes. This wine will gain lemon curd-like complexity until at least 2026.
